Mestís

Mestís is the solo project of Javier Reyes, best known as one-half of the guitar duo in the seminal progressive metal band Animals As Leaders. Formed in 2012, the project serves as a vehicle for Reyes to explore his Latin American roots and his interest in jazz fusion, moving away from the aggressive 'djent' sound of his primary band.

The music is characterized by the use of 8-string guitars played with a focus on chordal melody, percussive slapping, and clean-tone tapping. Reyes often collaborates with high-caliber musicians like Matt Garstka and percussionist Hector Barez to create a sound that bridges the gap between Berklee-level technicality and Caribbean rhythmic sensibilities. Critically, Mestís is praised for expanding the vocabulary of the extended-range guitar, proving its utility in soft, melodic, and groove-oriented contexts. The project sits at the center of the 'modern fusion' movement alongside artists like Plini and Owane, but remains distinct due to its specific integration of traditional Latin percussion and brass elements.
