Miami Horror is the creative vehicle of Melbourne-based producer Benjamin Plant, who evolved the project from a solo remix-heavy venture into a full-fledged live band. Emerging during the late 2000s Australian electronic boom alongside acts like Cut Copy and The Presets, Plant's sound is deeply indebted to the 'French Touch' house movement and 1980s art-pop.
The project's identity is defined by a 'psychedelic indie-electronic' aesthetic, utilizing vintage Roland synthesizers and live instrumentation to create a sound that is more organic than traditional EDM. Their 2010 debut, 'Illumination,' was a critical and commercial success, featuring high-profile collaborations with Kimbra and Neon Indian. Over their career, they have transitioned from club-oriented tracks to more complex, song-based arrangements that draw from Prince, New Order, and Todd Rundgren. Critically, they are regarded as masters of 'vibe' and atmosphere, often cited as pioneers of the 'sun-drenched' production style that would later influence the chillwave and nu-disco movements of the mid-2010s.
