Intro

Mike Batt creates music that exists at the intersection of a West End stage and a 1970s recording studio. It is unapologetically grand, characterized by the kind of massive orchestral arrangements that most pop artists only dream of. His sound is built on a foundation of lush strings, soaring woodwinds, and a distinctively British sense of pastoral melancholy that feels both timeless and deeply rooted in the golden age of analog production.

What sets Batt apart is his ability to marry high-concept theatricality with genuine pop hooks. Whether he is writing for animated characters or full symphony orchestras, there is a consistent thread of narrative ambition. His work often feels like a series of miniature movies, using dynamic shifts and rich textures to elevate simple melodies into epic emotional statements. It is music that isn't afraid to be sentimental or overtly dramatic.

Start with 'Tarot Suite' or the 'Watership Down' soundtrack to hear his mastery of the orchestral pop form. These works showcase his ability to create immersive worlds through sound, blending the precision of classical conducting with the accessibility of a chart-topping songwriter. It is the perfect starting point for anyone who loves music with a sense of scale and story.

Michael Philip Batt (born 6 February 1949) is an English singer-songwriter, musician, arranger, record producer, director, and conductor. He served as the Deputy Chairman of the British Phonographic Industry. Batt created the novelty pop band The Wombles, after recording the theme song for the animated BBC series of the same name. He also composed the song "Bright Eyes" for the 1978 animated film Watership Down. Batt promoted the early career of singer Katie Melua after signing her to his label, Dramatico. He wrote, arranged and produced her debut album Call Off the Search and her following two albums. Batt has conducted the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony and Stuttgart Philharmonic.
