Formed in 1986 in Jyväskylä, Miljoonasade became a cornerstone of 'Suomirock' by injecting a high level of literary sophistication into the genre. Led by frontman and lyricist Heikki Salo, the band moved beyond the punk-influenced simplicity of their contemporaries toward a more polished, art-rock influenced sound.
Their breakthrough single, 'Lapsuuden sankarille' (dedicated to Yuri Gagarin), established their penchant for mixing historical themes with personal nostalgia. Throughout the 1990s, albums like 'Lelukaupan häät' and 'Hevonen & Madonna' showcased a band comfortable with complex arrangements, incorporating elements of folk, synth-pop, and progressive rock. Critically, they are regarded as one of Finland's most important lyrical acts, with Salo's work often studied for its poetic merit. Their influence persists in the way modern Finnish indie acts approach storytelling, maintaining a balance between radio-friendly melodies and intellectual depth.
