Mister Heavenly

Gritty garage rock meets 1950s vocal pop. A noir-tinged indie supergroup that sounds like a jukebox playing in a haunted seaside dive bar.

Intro

Mister Heavenly creates a sound they famously dubbed 'doom-wop.' It is a fascinating collision of mid-century pop sensibilities and modern indie rock cynicism. Imagine the romantic, harmonized structures of 1950s vocal groups being dragged through a gritty, distortion-heavy garage in 2011. The result is music that feels both vintage and urgent, characterized by driving rhythms and a certain cinematic gloom.

What truly sets them apart is the vocal interplay between Honus Honus and Nicholas Thorburn. You get the gravelly, theatrical bark of the former contrasted against the smooth, melodic indie-pop delivery of the latter. This duality creates a tension that mirrors their lyrical themes of doomed romance and existential dread, all while maintaining a danceable, high-energy backbeat provided by veteran drummer Joe Plummer.

Start with their debut album, Out of Love. It perfectly encapsulates their mission statement, blending catchy hooks with a dark, slightly off-kilter edge. It is the ideal soundtrack for anyone who loves the classic songwriting of the past but wants it served with a side of modern grit and intellectual restlessness.

Mister Heavenly is an indie rock supergroup consisting of Honus Honus of Man Man, Nicholas Thorburn of Islands and The Unicorns, and Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse and The Shins. They recorded their first album in late 2010, finishing the year with a string of tour dates supporting Passion Pit, joined by Michael Cera as their touring bassist. In January 2011, they released two songs, the eponymous "Mister Heavenly" and "Pineapple Girl". Their first album, Out of Love, was released August 16, 2011. On July 19, 2017, a brief "coming soon" video was posted on the official Mister Heavenly Facebook account teasing a new release. On July 26, 2017, their first single "Beat Down" from the new album titled Boxing the Moonlight was released on YouTube. The album was released October 2017. Brett Morris, former guitarist of Man Man, and a producer and on-air talent for Earwolf and Comedy Bang Bang World, has been playing bass guitar with them as of the fall of 2017.
