Modern Skirts were a cornerstone of the mid-2000s Athens, Georgia music scene, representing a more melodic and piano-centric branch of the city's indie rock lineage. Formed in 2004, the band - consisting of Jay Gulley, JoJo Glidewell, Phillip Brantley, and John Swint - quickly gained a reputation for their sophisticated arrangements and vocal harmonies.
Their debut, 'Catalogue of Generous Men' (2005), established their sound: a blend of indie pop and chamber pop that prioritized melody and structural clarity. Over the course of three albums, they evolved from the bright, piano-led pop of their debut to the more atmospheric and experimental textures found on 'All Of Us In Our Night' and 'Gramahawk'. Critically, they were often compared to artists like Ben Folds or The Shins, though their sound maintained a distinct Southern collegiate warmth. They dissolved in 2013, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most polished and emotionally resonant acts of their era in the Southeast US indie circuit.
