Mombojó emerged from Recife, Pernambuco, in the early 2000s as a pivotal force in the second wave of the Manguebeat movement. While they inherited the genre-blending ethos of Chico Science, they pivoted away from heavy rock and maracatu toward a sophisticated indie-pop and alternative rock sound.
Their debut album, 'Nadadenovo' (2004), was a landmark in Brazilian independent music, utilizing a distribution model through magazines that bypassed traditional labels. The band's sound is defined by a 'low-fi' vocal aesthetic contrasted with 'hi-fi' instrumental arrangements, often featuring woodwinds and brass alongside synthesizers. The tragic passing of multi-instrumentalist Rafael in 2007 marked a shift in their trajectory, leading to the more introspective and polished 'Amigo do Tempo' (2010).
