Introspective, gauzy pop that feels like a private conversation. Hypnotic organ drones and breathy French vocals for quiet moments of deep thought.
Monade was formed in Bordeaux, France, as the primary creative outlet for Lætitia Sadier outside of her work with Stereolab. Initially a lo-fi side project, it debuted with 'Socialisme Ou Barbarie' in 2003, a collection of recordings spanning six years that captured a transition from bedroom experimentation to structured art-pop.
The project's name, derived from Cornelius Castoriadis's psychological theories, reflects Sadier's interest in the formation of the self and social consciousness. By their second album, 'A Few Steps More' (2005), Monade had evolved into a full band with a more refined, 'symphonic' approach to dream pop and post-rock. Critically, the band is often compared to Broadcast and Pram for their use of vintage electronics and haunting, ethereal atmospheres. Unlike the more rhythmic-focused Stereolab, Monade emphasizes harmonic density and vocal layering, often utilizing Sadier's voice as a textural instrument. The project concluded in 2009 when Sadier transitioned to releasing music under her own name, leaving behind a trilogy of albums that are highly regarded by collectors of Duophonic and Drag City labels for their intellectual depth and sonic warmth.
