High-velocity chiptune colliding with industrial noise and post-hardcore grit. Chaotic, bitcrushed energy for when you need to outrun your own thoughts.
Monomate is the solo moniker of Portland-based musician Pete Bunke, better known as PEET. Emerging from the niche 'Nintendocore' scene of the late 2000s, Monomate represents a significant evolution of the genre from simple video game covers to a sophisticated, experimental fusion of chiptune, post-hardcore, and industrial noise.
Bunke's earlier work in projects like iamerror established a template for 'bitcore' - a high-energy blend of 8-bit synthesis and hardcore punk structures. With Monomate, this sound became more personal and sonically adventurous. The 2011 double release 'Negative Emotions/Positive Outlook' signaled a shift away from pure chiptune toward a broader palette of noise, ambient, and industrial textures. Critically, Monomate is respected for pushing the boundaries of what 8-bit hardware can express emotionally, moving beyond novelty into themes of mental health and existential dread. The project occupies a unique space in the DIY electronic underground, bridging the gap between the chipscene and the broader experimental noise community.
