Monuments was an Italian minimal synth duo consisting of Andrea Costa and Mauro Tavella, active in Turin during the early 1980s. Emerging from the same fertile underground scene that produced acts like Kirlian Camera, they moved away from the aggressive industrial sounds of the time toward a more melodic, albeit somber, synth-pop aesthetic.
Their sound is characterized by the use of analog hardware like the Korg MS-20 and Roland TR-808, treated with heavy tape saturation and reverb to create a 'murky' but warm sonic profile. Historically, they represent a bridge between the coldwave movement and the more accessible synth-pop that would dominate the decade. While their output was limited during their initial run, the 2015 archival release 'From The Future' solidified their reputation among crate-diggers and electronic music historians as pioneers of the 'minimal synth' subgenre. They are frequently cited for their ability to evoke 'retro-futurism' - a vision of the future seen through the lens of early 80s technology.
