Mortuus

Mortuus is a Swedish black metal entity formed in 2003, primarily consisting of the duo Tehôm and M. Sjögren.

They are central figures in the 'Orthodox Black Metal' movement, a sub-movement that emerged in the mid-2000s emphasizing theological Satanism and a more sophisticated, often dissonant musical approach. Unlike the high-speed tremolo picking of their contemporaries, Mortuus often utilizes a slower, more deliberate pace that incorporates elements of death and doom metal. Their discography, notably 'De contemplanda morte' and 'Grape of the Vine', is characterized by a dense, murky production style that prioritizes atmosphere over clarity. Critically, they are respected for their uncompromising adherence to a dark, ritualistic aesthetic and their ability to create a sense of genuine dread.
