Moti Special was a West German synth-pop quartet formed in Hamburg in 1981, notable for its lineup of seasoned session professionals. The band featured Romanian-born Michael Cretu (keyboards), who would later achieve global fame with Enigma and produce Sandra; Manfred Thiers (vocals/bass); Nils Tuxen (guitar); and Reinhard Tarrach (drums).
Their sound identity is a refined iteration of the 'Continental' New Wave style, prioritizing high-fidelity digital production, sophisticated melodic structures, and a distinct nocturnal aesthetic. Their 1985 debut album, 'Motivation', yielded several European hits, most notably 'Cold Days, Hot Nights' and 'Don't Be So Shy'. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the experimentalism of early German electronic music and the commercial Euro-pop of the late 80s. The group's influence is most visible in the later work of Cretu, where the atmospheric synth layering pioneered in Moti Special evolved into the New Age textures of Enigma.
