Moving Hearts represents the pinnacle of the second wave of the Irish folk revival, moving beyond the folk-rock foundations laid by Horslips into a more complex, jazz-fusion influenced territory. Formed in 1981 by Planxty alumni Dónal Lunny and Christy Moore, the group was a 'supergroup' of sorts, designed to bridge the gap between traditional Irish music and contemporary social realities.
Their early work is defined by Moore's gritty, baritone delivery of explicitly political lyrics concerning the Troubles and social inequality. Following Moore's departure, the band pivoted toward an acclaimed instrumental phase, culminating in 'The Storm' (1985), which remains a landmark in Celtic music for its technical virtuosity and integration of uilleann pipes into a jazz-rock context. The band's influence is immense, paving the way for modern acts that blend traditional sounds with experimental textures. Critical consensus views them as the most sophisticated ensemble to ever emerge from the Irish tradition, noted for their cooperative structure and uncompromising sonic identity.
