Moving Mountains emerged from the Westchester, New York scene as a unique hybrid of post-rock and emo. Founded in 2005 by Gregory Dunn and Nicholas Pizzolato, the project began with the 'Pneuma' demo, which established their signature sound: long-form compositions, complex drumming, and lyrics centered on the death of a close friend.
This thematic focus on grief gave their music a weight and sincerity that resonated with fans of both The Appleseed Cast and Thrice. Over their career, they evolved from the raw, sprawling structures of 'Pneuma' and 'Foreword' toward the more structured, alternative rock-influenced 'Waves' and their self-titled 2013 LP. Critically, they are regarded as a pivotal band in the 'emo-revival' adjacent space, though their technical proficiency and cinematic scope often set them apart from their peers.
