Mr. Bungle

Formed in 1985 in Eureka, California, Mr. Bungle is the definitive experimental rock outfit of the 1990s.

Led by the polymathic Mike Patton alongside core members Trey Spruance and Trevor Dunn, the band evolved from a teenage death metal project into a sophisticated, genre-defying ensemble. Their three major-label albums on Warner Bros. represent a peak of high-budget experimentalism, utilizing the label's resources to create dense, sample-heavy, and instrumentally diverse records like 'Disco Volante'. The band's influence is vast, notably providing the 'tritone' blueprint for the nu-metal movement, though Mr. Bungle themselves remained far more musically complex than their successors. After a long hiatus, they returned in 2020 by circling back to their thrash metal roots with 'The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo', featuring metal legends Dave Lombardo and Scott Ian. Critically, they are regarded as a 'musician's band', celebrated for their technical proficiency and their refusal to adhere to commercial expectations despite their major-label status.
