Mt Eden

Cinematic, melodic dubstep that pairs heavy sub-bass with ethereal vocal chops. Perfect for late-night reflection or watching the sun sink below the horizon.

Intro

Mt Eden captures a very specific era of the internet, where bedroom producers turned melancholic vocal samples into towering monuments of sound. It is dubstep, but it is rarely aggressive; instead, it feels like a slow-motion explosion of emotion. The music is defined by its massive, cavernous space, where every snare hit echoes and every bass note feels like it is vibrating through water.

What makes them distinctive is the 'Mt Eden sound' of the early 2010s: taking a beautiful, often folk or indie vocal, and stretching it across a half-time rhythm that feels both heavy and weightless. They pioneered a style of melodic dubstep that prioritizes atmosphere and 'the feels' over the mechanical aggression found in North American brostep. It is music that feels deeply personal despite its stadium-sized production.

Start with 'Sierra Leone' to understand the blueprint of their success. It is the definitive example of how they use vocal repetition and rising tension to create a sense of cinematic longing. From there, move into their 'Distance Kills' era to see how they refined that bedroom-born sound into something more polished and expansive.

Jesse Cooper, known under the pseudonym Mt Eden (and formerly Mt Eden Dubstep), is a New Zealand electronic musician based in Auckland. Popular tracks include "Sierra Leone" – a remix of Freshlyground's "I'd Like" – and remixes of Delerium's "Silence" as well as Lisa Miskovsky's "Still Alive". Mt Eden began gaining popularity following the 2009 release of Sierra Leone, which went viral on YouTube. Mt Eden currently has 146 million combined video views and over 261 thousand subscribers on the act's YouTube channel, as well as more than 291 663 "likes" on Facebook.
