Mumm-Ra emerged from Bexhill-on-Sea during the height of the UK's indie rock boom in the mid-2000s. While often grouped with the 'Landfill Indie' movement, the band possessed a melodic sophistication and a penchant for art-pop arrangements that set them apart.
Their sound is characterized by James New's earnest vocal delivery and a dual-guitar attack that favors shimmering textures over raw aggression. Their 2007 debut, 'These Things Move in Threes', remains a cult classic of the era, notably bolstered by the inclusion of 'She's Got You High' on the soundtrack for '(500) Days of Summer'. Despite a hiatus beginning in 2008, the band's legacy has been sustained by a dedicated fanbase and periodic reunions that produced the more mature, expansive 'Back to the Shore' EP in 2014. Critically, they are remembered for their ability to infuse the standard indie-rock template with a sense of wonder and melodic 'sweep' that felt more ambitious than many of their chart-topping peers.
