MURO

Deep-cut rare grooves and dusty boom-bap from the King of Diggin'. Essential Japanese hip-hop that feels like a late-night record store session.

Intro

Muro's sound is the definitive heartbeat of Japanese hip-hop, built on a foundation of obsessive record collecting and impeccable rhythmic timing. It sounds like the warmth of a well-loved vinyl record, characterized by heavy, swinging drum breaks and lush samples pulled from the deepest corners of funk, soul, and disco history. There is a specific urban grit to his production that feels inseparable from the nightlife of Tokyo, yet it carries a global soul-jazz sophistication.

What truly distinguishes Muro is his 'King of Diggin' persona, which manifests in his music as a relentless pursuit of the perfect, undiscovered loop. Unlike many of his contemporaries who relied on chart-topping hits, Muro’s tracks often feature obscure Salsoul breaks or rare Japanese fusion snippets, layered with a crispness that honors the original source while pushing it into a modern hip-hop context. His work with Microphone Pager and Nitro Microphone Underground showcases a technical mastery of the boom-bap aesthetic that is both rugged and refined.

For those looking to dive in, '20 Street Years' or 'Chain Reaction' serve as excellent gateways into his production style. These albums highlight his ability to bridge the gap between a DJ's curatorial ear and a producer's creative vision. It is music for the heads, for the collectors, and for anyone who believes the best sounds are the ones you have to dig for.

In addition to producing he also was active as a designer.
