Mystery is a cornerstone of the Canadian neo-progressive rock scene, founded in 1986 by guitarist and primary songwriter Michel St-Père. Based in Quebec, the band has navigated several lineup changes, most notably in the vocal department, while maintaining a consistent sonic identity defined by melodicism and high production values.
Their evolution from an AOR-influenced sound in the early 90s to a more symphonic and expansive art rock style has earned them a dedicated global following. A significant part of their history involves drummer Stéphane Perreault, who continued to play after losing the use of his legs, developing a unique wheelchair-based technique. The band gained further international visibility when former vocalist Benoît David was recruited to front Yes. Critically, Mystery is praised for avoiding 'noodling' in favor of 'emotional' shredding and for St-Père's role as a producer, ensuring every album meets a high-fidelity standard.
