Natas (Nation Ahead of Time And Space) is a foundational pillar of the Detroit hip-hop underground, credited alongside member Esham for pioneering the 'Acid Rap' and horrorcore subgenres. Formed in 1992, the trio - consisting of Esham, Mastamind, and T-N-T - rejected the commercial aspirations of 90s rap in favor of a dark, anarchic aesthetic that mirrored the post-industrial decay of Detroit.
Their sound is characterized by a heavy reliance on rock and metal samples, a technique influenced by the Bomb Squad's wall-of-sound production, but applied to themes of death, spirituality, and urban isolation. Com' demonstrated significant evolution in technical ability and production complexity. The group's influence is visible in the subsequent rise of the 'Wicked Shit' scene in Detroit and the broader horrorcore movement. Despite the death of T-N-T in 2014, the group's legacy persists through Esham's continued output and their status as cult icons of independent, transgressive hip-hop.
