Naughty by Nature emerged from East Orange, New Jersey, as a pivotal force in the early 1990s East Coast hip-hop scene. Originally forming as The New Style, the group underwent a rebranding under the mentorship of Queen Latifah, which sharpened their image and sound.
The trio, consisting of Treach, Vin Rock, and DJ Kay Gee, became masters of the 'street anthem,' a subgenre that balanced hardcore lyricism with pop-leaning sensibilities. Treach is widely regarded by critics as one of the most technical emcees of his era, known for a complex, percussive flow that influenced a generation of rappers. DJ Kay Gee's production was equally influential, bridging the gap between hip-hop and R&B, eventually leading to his success as a producer for acts like Zhané and Next. Their career is marked by massive commercial success, including a Grammy for Best Rap Album in 1996 for 'Poverty's Paradise.'
