Nautilis

Nautilis is the primary electronic alias of American producer Skyler McGlothlin, who also records as Malcom Kipe. Emerging in the early 2000s, Nautilis became a key figure in the second wave of IDM, specifically the movement that fused the complex DSP-driven glitch aesthetics of labels like Warp with the rhythmic foundations of instrumental hip-hop.

His work on Mike Paradinas's Planet Mu label, particularly the 2002 album 'Are You an Axolotl', is considered a high-water mark for the 'glitch-hop' subgenre. McGlothlin's sound identity is defined by micro-edited drum breaks, melodic fragments that feel both synthetic and melancholic, and a sophisticated use of negative space. While his Malcom Kipe project leans more heavily into traditional hip-hop structures and vocal collaborations, Nautilis remains his more abstract, experimental outlet. Critically, he is often grouped with contemporaries like Prefuse 73 and Push Button Objects, though his work typically features a more 'brittle' and 'crystalline' sonic palette.
