Nearly Oratorio

Nearly Oratorio is the solo moniker of Melbourne-based producer and vocalist Simon Lam, a central figure in the Australian electronic scene through his work with Kllo and I'lls. Launched in 2016, the project serves as a vessel for Lam's most introspective and minimalist impulses.

While his work in Kllo leans toward garage-influenced pop and I'lls explored experimental jazz-inflected electronics, Nearly Oratorio is defined by its 'bedroom' aesthetic and extreme vocal intimacy. The sound identity is built on breathy, whispered vocals, micro-glitch percussion, and melancholic piano motifs. Critically, Lam is praised for his restraint; he utilizes silence as a primary instrument, creating a sense of 'misty' atmosphere that aligns him with artists like James Blake or early Bon Iver, but with a distinctly Australian downtempo sensibility.
