Hypnotic Persian poetry woven into shimmering electronic tapestries. A bridge between ancient Sufi mysticism and modern late-night dance floors.
Niyaz creates a sound that feels like a bridge between a 13th-century courtyard and a high-end electronic lounge in a futuristic metropolis. The music is anchored by Azam Ali's extraordinary voice, which possesses a crystalline purity and a haunting, melismatic agility that feels both ancient and timeless. Beneath her vocals, the production is a lush, sophisticated blend of acoustic traditional instruments and deep, pulsating electronic rhythms.
What truly distinguishes the group is their ability to treat sacred Sufi and folk traditions not as museum pieces, but as living, breathing foundations for modern exploration. The interplay between the hammered dulcimer's bright, percussive shimmer and the dark, subterranean throb of Carmen Rizzo's programming creates a unique tension. It is music that is deeply spiritual yet physically engaging, offering a trance-like experience that rewards both focused meditation and late-night movement.
To experience Niyaz at their peak, start with their self-titled debut or 'Nine Heavens'. These albums perfectly capture their 'mystical music with a modern edge' philosophy, blending Urdu and Persian poetry with sophisticated downtempo beats. It is the ideal soundtrack for moments requiring both intellectual depth and sensory beauty.
Niyaz (Persian: نياز) is an Iranian Canadian musical duo. The group was created in 2004 by DJ, programmer/producer and remixer Carmen Rizzo, vocalist and hammered dulcimer player Azam Ali, formerly of the group Vas, and Ali's husband, Loga Ramin Torkian, of the Iranian crossover group Axiom Of Choice. In 2013, Carmen Rizzo announced via Facebook that he was retiring from Niyaz. "Niyaz" means "yearning" in Persian, Urdu and Turkish. Niyaz's music, described as "mystical music with a modern edge", is primarily a blend of Sufi mysticism and trance electronica. Niyaz adapts Persian, Indian and Mediterranean folk sounds, poetry and songs including the poetry of Sufi mystic Rumi, with Western electronic instrumentation and programming. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2005, combined 13th century Sufi and Urdu poetry with "swirling, hypnotic beats". Their 2008 follow-up album, Nine Heavens, featured two discs; the second disc contained acoustic renditions of the tracks on the first disc. Their third album, Sumud (صمود), released in spring 2012. A companion piece to the album, an acoustic EP with six songs, was released March 19, 2013.
