Bright, melodic pop rock that functions as a high-fidelity love letter to 80s cinema and nerd culture. Playful, nostalgic, and incredibly catchy.
No More Kings sounds like the best parts of your childhood VHS collection filtered through a modern, high-fidelity pop-rock lens. It is music that wears its heart on its sleeve, blending the earnest melodicism of Ben Folds with the synth-heavy textures of 80s new wave. The production is clean and bright, often featuring lush vocal harmonies and rhythmic grooves that lean into funk and power-pop.
What truly sets them apart is their commitment to narrative storytelling. Instead of generic love songs, you get detailed character studies of pop culture icons, from the misunderstood antagonist of The Karate Kid to the sentient robot from Short Circuit. It is 'geek rock' that prioritizes musicality over novelty, ensuring the songs stand up as great pop even if you miss the specific references.
Start with their self-titled debut album, specifically the track 'Sweep the Leg.' It perfectly encapsulates their ability to turn a niche cinematic reference into a soaring, anthemic pop song that feels both familiar and entirely fresh.
No More Kings is a Los Angeles-based musical duo formed by singer/songwriter Pete Mitchell and producer/songwriter Neil DeGraide. No More Kings' music is known for its frequent references to figures in pop culture, most notably Johnny Lawrence from The Karate Kid, Michael and K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider, Johnny 5 from Short Circuit, and Dungeons & Dragons. The name "No More Kings" comes from an episode of Schoolhouse Rock!, one of many of No More Kings' inspirations. The particular episode dealt with the Pilgrims leaving England, seeking freedom and independence. Mitchell studied fine art in college and has worked for Disney and the Jim Henson Company; he is an accomplished animator and also speaks Japanese. He designed the interior album art for the band's first album as well as the album art and packaging for their second album. Mitchell claims his main sources of musical inspiration are the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Radiohead, Billy Joel, Beck, and Genesis.
