October Project

Lush, piano-driven chamber pop with haunting alto vocals and intricate harmonies. It feels like a gothic novel set to music. Perfect for autumn dusks.

Intro

October Project creates a sound that is both grand and intimate, sitting at the intersection of 90s alternative pop and classical chamber music. Their music is defined by the deep, resonant alto of Mary Fahl (in their classic era) and the intricate, almost mathematical vocal harmonies that surround her. It is music that feels architectural, built on sturdy piano foundations and decorated with sweeping orchestral flourishes and poetic, metaphorical lyrics.

What truly distinguishes them is the 'theatrical' quality of their arrangements. Unlike the stripped-back folk of their contemporaries, October Project embraces a high-drama, high-fidelity production style that evokes the atmosphere of a cathedral or a Victorian parlor. The interplay between the male and female voices creates a dense, choral texture that feels more like a sacred round than a standard pop song.

New listeners should start with their self-titled debut or 'Falling Farther In'. These albums capture the band at their commercial peak, offering a masterclass in how to blend pop accessibility with a dark, sophisticated, and deeply literate aesthetic. It is the ideal soundtrack for anyone who finds beauty in the transition of seasons and the quiet drama of the natural world.

October Project is an American pop rock band based in New York City. The group reached critical and commercial success with their 1990s Epic Records releases October Project and Falling Farther In. The group's piano-driven music is characterized by close vocal harmonies. The band currently consists of lead vocalist Marina Belica, vocalist Julie Flanders, and keyboardist/vocalist Emil Adler. Flanders and Adler are the primary songwriters. Previous members include vocalist Mary Fahl and guitarist/vocalist David Sabatino. Sabatino occasionally still performs live with the band.
