Intro

Oliver Shanti creates a world that feels like a meticulously curated digital garden. The sound is defined by its immense clarity and depth, utilizing 1990s-era high-fidelity production to blend traditional instruments from across the globe with sweeping synthesizer pads. It is music that aims for a state of perpetual grace, avoiding sharp edges or aggressive transitions in favor of a smooth, liquid flow.

What makes this work distinctive is the 'Friends' aspect of the ensemble, which introduces a variety of vocal traditions, from Gregorian-style chanting to Eastern spiritual invocations, all treated with heavy, ethereal reverb. The percussion is often rhythmic but never intrusive, acting as a heartbeat for the more melodic flute and string elements. It occupies that specific space between active listening and environmental enhancement.

For those new to this sound, the Buddha and Bonsai series offers a perfect entry point. These albums exemplify the project's ability to create a cohesive, peaceful atmosphere that feels both ancient and modern. It is ideal for anyone seeking a sonic backdrop that encourages stillness and internal reflection.

After having attempted suicide during his pre-trial custody, in 2009, Shanti was sentenced to six years and ten months in prison, having been convicted on charges of child sexual abuse. The remainder of Oliver Shanti & Friends continued performing and recording as Existence, with another Inkarnation co-founder, Margot Reisinger, replacing Shanti.
