ON is the primary solo moniker of Ken Andrews, the visionary producer and songwriter behind the influential space-rock band Failure. Following Failure's 1997 dissolution, Andrews moved away from the 'wall of guitars' approach to explore the possibilities of digital recording and electronic textures.
The project's debut, Shifting Skin (2000), was a pivot toward a more clinical, synth-driven sound, influenced by Depeche Mode and contemporary electronica. Despite high-profile collaborations, including a remix by Martin Gore, the project struggled to find a commercial foothold in a market still dominated by post-grunge. Andrews' work as ON is critically regarded as a bridge between the 90s alternative scene and the more experimental, producer-led rock of the 2000s. His technical mastery as a mix engineer is evident throughout the discography, characterized by extreme sonic clarity and complex layering. The project effectively ended when Andrews formed Year of the Rabbit and later transitioned into a highly successful career as a producer for acts like Paramore and Jimmy Eat World.
