Vibrant, polyrhythmic art-rock that feels like a ritual in a neon forest. Tribal chanting meets jagged guitars for a playful yet intense psychedelic experience.
Listening to OOIOO is like stumbling upon a secret ceremony in a high-tech jungle. The music is a dizzying swirl of polyrhythmic percussion, jagged guitar lines, and vocal chants that feel both ancient and futuristic. It is deeply rhythmic but never predictable, moving with a majestic ebb and flow that mimics natural phenomena like a sudden thunderstorm or a flock of birds taking flight.
What truly sets them apart is the sense of unbridled play. Founded by Yoshimi P-We of Boredoms, the group treats the studio like a laboratory for joy. They blend the aggression of noise rock with the intricate structures of gamelan and the shimmering textures of neo-psychedelia. It is music that feels alive, breathing through its dense layers of sound and spontaneous vocal outbursts.
Start with 'Armonico Hewa' to hear their most realized vision of tribal-futurism. If you prefer something more raw and punk-adjacent, 'Feather Float' captures their early, chaotic energy. It is the perfect soundtrack for when you want to feel connected to something primal but distinctly modern.
OOIOO is a Japanese experimental rock band. The four-piece ensemble was founded by Yoshimi P-We (also known as Yoshimio), the drummer and occasional trumpeter for Boredoms. The band's origin lies in a photo shoot that Yoshimi was asked to do for a magazine. She invited a few of her friends to join her, and they created a fake band for the shoot, which they later decided to make real. The band quickly gained attention by being the opening act for Sonic Youth in 1997 on their Japan tour. According to AllMusic's Kieran McCarthy "It's next to impossible to describe their sound, because — by design — it rarely follows consistent patterns". Some of their music has been described as having "a majestic ebb and flow that suggests natural wonders" or a "witchy, tribal side". Either way, at any one time it may incorporate chanting and punchy drums, dancey polyrhythms atonal composition or psychedelia.
