Orquesta del Desierto

Sun-baked acoustic guitars and lonesome mariachi horns. A soulful, dusty take on the desert rock sound that feels like a long drive through the Mojave at dusk.

Intro

Orquesta del Desierto represents a pivotal, albeit short-lived, creative pivot within the Palm Desert Scene. Formed in 2002 by producer Dandy Brown, the project functioned as a supergroup of desert rock royalty, featuring members of Kyuss, Fatso Jetson, and Goatsnake.

Unlike the high-gain 'stoner' sound typically associated with these musicians, Orquesta del Desierto explored a 'desert folk' aesthetic. The sound identity is defined by the interplay between acoustic instrumentation and the San Jacinto Horns, creating a unique intersection of stoner rock, mariachi, and Americana. Their two-album run, 'Orquesta del Desierto' and 'Dos', received critical acclaim for expanding the boundaries of the genre, moving away from the 'heavy' toward the 'atmospheric'. The group dissolved in 2006 as members returned to their primary projects, but they remain a cult favorite for their sophisticated, melodic contribution to the desert rock canon, influencing later 'desert noir' and psychedelic folk movements.
