Osanna stands as one of the most vital pillars of the 'Rock Progressivo Italiano' (RPI) scene. Formed in Naples in 1971 from the ashes of Città Frontale and Showmen, they brought a uniquely Mediterranean aggression to the genre.
Their sound is characterized by Elio D'Anna's distinctive, overblown flute and saxophone work, which often functions as a lead instrument alongside Danilo Rustici's heavy guitar work. Their 1973 masterpiece 'Palepoli' is frequently cited by critics as the definitive RPI album, showcasing a complex blend of Neapolitan folk, jazz-fusion, and hard rock. Beyond the music, the band was known for their theatrical live shows involving face paint and costumes, predating similar moves by UK acts. Their collaboration with composer Luis Bacalov for the 'Milano Calibro 9' soundtrack solidified their place in the 'poliziotteschi' film subculture, blending symphonic elements with gritty, urban grooves. Despite several hiatuses, the band remains a symbol of Italian artistic ambition, influencing generations of experimental musicians with their uncompromising, dense arrangements.
