Intro

Imagine the warmth of a Santa Fe sunset captured in six strings. Ottmar Liebert’s sound is defined by the crisp, melodic clarity of the nylon-string guitar, supported by a rhythmic pulse that feels like a heartbeat. It is music that occupies the space between the fire of traditional flamenco and the cool, spacious textures of contemporary ambient music. The production is pristine, allowing every finger slide and harmonic to ring out with intentionality.

What makes Liebert distinctive is his 'Nouveau Flamenco' philosophy. He strips away the aggressive, percussive intensity often associated with pure flamenco, replacing it with a pop-sensible melodicism and jazz-influenced harmonies. There is a specific lightness to his touch; he treats the guitar not just as a lead instrument, but as a source of atmospheric comfort. It is sophisticated without being demanding, striking a balance between technical mastery and pure relaxation.

Newcomers should start with his breakthrough debut, Nouveau Flamenco. It remains the definitive statement of his aesthetic, blending Mediterranean flair with a distinctly Southwestern American sense of space. For a more stripped-back experience, his Bare Wood series highlights the raw beauty of his instrument without the 90s-era synth embellishments, proving that his melodic instincts are timeless.

Ottmar Liebert (born 1 February 1959) is a German guitarist, songwriter and producer best known for his Spanish-influenced music. A five-time Grammy Award nominee, Liebert has received 38 Gold and Platinum certifications in the United States, as well as certifications in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. His debut album Nouveau Flamenco (1990) was certified Platinum in the United States.
