Padi (now Padi Reborn) is a cornerstone of the Indonesian '90s and 2000s rock explosion. Formed at Airlangga University in Surabaya, they transitioned from a campus band named Soda to a national phenomenon.
Their sound identity is defined by the synergy between Piyu's songwriting and Fadly's soaring vocals. Historically, they are one of Indonesia's highest-selling acts, with Sesuatu Yang Tertunda moving 2 million copies. Their career arc saw them move from the raw alternative energy of Lain Dunia to the polished, dark art-rock of Save My Soul, before a hiatus led to their 2017 reformation as Padi Reborn. They are critically regarded as 'musician's musicians' within the pop-rock sphere, often cited for their technical proficiency and philosophical lyrical depth. They occupy a similar cultural space to Dewa 19 and Sheila on 7 but are distinguished by a more somber, guitar-driven aesthetic.
