Glossy, high-fidelity synth-pop that bridges the gap between 1982 futurism and modern club production. Polished, melodic, and deeply rhythmic.
Parralox sounds like a high-definition restoration of a lost 1980s masterpiece. The music is built on a foundation of pristine synthesizer patches, driving drum machine patterns, and a rotating cast of female vocalists who bring a sense of cool, detached elegance to the hooks. It is music that feels both vintage and cutting-edge, capturing the optimistic futurism of the early MTV era while utilizing the surgical precision of modern digital production.
What truly distinguishes the project is John von Ahlen's obsessive attention to sonic detail. Unlike many synthwave acts that lean into lo-fi grit or irony, Parralox pursues a 'super-pop' aesthetic. The arrangements are dense but never muddy, featuring interlocking sequences and basslines that feel physically present. There is a cinematic quality to their work, often evoking the neon-drenched urban landscapes of science fiction cinema without ever losing the infectious energy of a great pop song.
Start with their debut 'Electricity' to hear the foundational sound that put them on the map, or dive into 'Aeronaut' for a more refined, atmospheric experience. If you are a fan of the 'Holiday' series, their prolific output of covers provides a fascinating look at how they can transform classic tracks from Depeche Mode or The Human League into their own polished, synthetic image.
Parralox is an Australian synthpop band formed by John von Ahlen in 2008. Originally featuring lead vocalist Rowena "Roxy" Martin and producer-songwriter von Ahlen, the band has undergone a number of line-up changes, including the additions of vocalists Amii Jackson, Johanna Gervin and Louise Love, and the addition of The Human League's Ian Burden on bass guitar. Their debut single "I Fell in Love with a Drum Machine", released February 2008, caught the attention of the international EDM community, propelling the duo from local to international prominence. In 2009, Parralox remixed Swedish electronica artist Emmon's "Lips on Fire" single earning the band an official release on Wonderland Records. Parralox digitally distribute their music through independent label Subterrane Records; in 2009 the band signed to German electro label, Conzoom Records. Parralox have gained support and acclaim from Perez Hilton and veteran music blogger, Arjan Writes. As of September 2025, the band have released seven albums of original material, and three albums consisting of covers, as well as eleven albums and EPs in their "Holiday" series of covers. They have performed internationally in Germany, Sweden, Spain, the United States and England.
