Particle emerged from the Los Angeles scene in 2000 as a pivotal figure in the 'livetronica' movement, a subgenre that fused the improvisational ethos of jam bands like Phish with the rhythmic structures of electronic music. Led by keyboardist Steve Molitz, the band became known for their relentless touring and high-energy live shows.

Their sound identity is built on a foundation of 'space funk', utilizing vintage analog synths to create textures reminiscent of Pink Floyd or Return to Forever, but anchored by disco and house-influenced drum patterns.
