Aggressively earnest acoustic songs that feel like a late-night conversation with a best friend. Raw, heart-on-sleeve folk punk for the lonely and the hopeful.
Paul Baribeau makes music that feels like a warm, slightly scratchy wool blanket. It is defined by a radical, almost uncomfortable level of honesty, delivered through a voice that cracks and strains under the weight of its own sincerity. The instrumentation is usually just a single acoustic guitar, played with a percussive, punk-rock urgency that makes the simple chords feel like a call to arms.
What sets him apart is his ability to turn mundane observations into profound emotional anchors. He doesn't hide behind metaphors or irony; instead, he leans into the awkwardness of being human, singing about friendship, self-doubt, and the passage of time with a clarity that makes you feel seen. It is the sound of the DIY basement scene stripped of its cynicism and replaced with pure, unadulterated heart.
Start with 'Grand Ledge' to hear his songwriting at its most evocative and grounded. It captures a specific sense of place and personhood that serves as the perfect entry point into his world. If you want something even more stripped-back, his self-titled debut offers the purest distillation of his one-man-and-a-guitar ethos.
