Pegazus

Pegazus is a cornerstone of the Australian traditional heavy metal scene, formed in Melbourne in 1993. Led by founding guitarist Johnny Stoj, the band emerged as a defiant torchbearer for classic metal during a decade dominated by alternative rock.

Their sound identity is rooted in the NWOBHM tradition, specifically influenced by Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, but infused with the epic, melodic sensibilities of European power metal. Their career reached a significant milestone in 1998 when they signed with Nuclear Blast, leading to high-profile appearances at Wacken Open Air and tours with HammerFall. Despite numerous lineup changes, particularly in the vocal department, the band has maintained a consistent sonic signature: galloping basslines, dual-guitar harmonies, and high-register operatic vocals. Critically, they are respected for their technical proficiency and for being one of the few Australian metal acts to achieve a foothold in the European market during the late 90s. Their influence persists within the 'New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal' (NWOTHM) circles, where they are viewed as a bridge between the original pioneers and modern revivalists.
