Bouncy, whimsical analog synths and intricate tape loops. This is the sound of the 1960s imagining the year 2000. Perfect for a playful, retro-futurist mood.
Perrey & Kingsley sound like a laboratory where the scientists are throwing a surprise birthday party. It is a world of elastic basslines, chirping oscillators, and rhythmic tape splices that feel remarkably tactile. The music is defined by a high-fidelity 'ping-pong' stereo effect and a relentless sense of momentum that bridges the gap between avant-garde experimentation and pure pop joy.
What truly sets them apart is the 'human' quality they coaxed out of early machines. Using the Ondioline and early Moog systems, they created melodies that sneeze, giggle, and bounce. Their pioneering use of tape loops as rhythmic foundations predates modern sampling by decades, yet it feels lighthearted rather than academic. It is the sonic equivalent of a Technicolor cartoon.
Start with 'The In Sound From Way Out!' to hear the blueprint for electronic pop. It is essential listening for anyone who loves the intersection of technology and whimsy, or those who want to hear the DNA of everything from Sesame Street to the Beastie Boys.
Perrey and Kingsley (known also as "Perrey & Kingsley" or "Perrey-Kingsley") was an electronic music duo made up of French composer Jean-Jacques Perrey and German-American composer Gershon Kingsley. The duo lasted from 1965 to 1967 and both are considered pioneers of electronic music. The duo recorded for Vanguard Records and released two studio albums: The In Sound From Way Out! and Kaleidoscopic Vibrations. They also were among the first musicians to incorporate the Moog synthesizer, prior to the successful 1968 release Switched-On Bach by Wendy Carlos.
