Gritty neo-psychedelia that channels the spirit of 1960s garage rock through a dark, B-movie lens. Fuzz-heavy, organ-driven, and perfect for late-night rebellion.
Plan 9 sounds like a lost transmission from a 1966 garage, filtered through the jagged energy of the early 80s underground. It is music built on a foundation of snarling fuzz guitars, swirling organ melodies, and a rhythmic urgency that feels both primitive and sophisticated. There is a palpable layer of grit and analog warmth that makes every track feel like it was unearthed from a time capsule buried beneath a drive-in theater.
What sets them apart is their ability to inhabit the 'horror' aesthetic without falling into the campy traps of novelty music. They treat the psychedelic experience as something slightly dangerous and shadowy, blending surf-rock twang with a brooding, post-punk intensity. The interplay between the multiple guitarists creates a dense, shimmering wall of sound that never loses its sharp, aggressive edge.
Start with 'Dealing With the Dead' to experience their peak fusion of garage-rock revivalism and dark, atmospheric songwriting. It is the definitive entry point for anyone who wants to hear how the 60s psychedelic dream curdled into something more cynical and exciting during the Reagan era.
Plan 9 is an American neo-psychedelic band from Rhode Island formed in 1979. The group was named for the 1950s science fiction film Plan 9 from Outer Space. The Calgary Herald wrote, in 1989, "Its music has that spirited, no-holds-barred feel of rock from the '60s while managing to not sound dated." The band was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in 2017, alongside Throwing Muses and several other acts.
