Gritty Texas boogie meets polished AOR radio hooks. Hard-driving Southern rock with dual-guitar muscle and a soulful, whiskey-soaked edge.
Formed in Irving, Texas in 1974, Point Blank emerged as a key practitioner of the 'Texas Sound,' blending the boogie-inflected blues of ZZ Top with the aggressive dual-guitar attack of British hard rock bands like Deep Purple. Managed by Bill Ham (who also managed ZZ Top), the band initially focused on a raw, guitar-heavy aesthetic seen on their first two albums, 'Point Blank' and 'Second Season.'
As the 1970s transitioned into the 1980s, the band evolved toward an Adult Oriented Rock (AOR) sound, culminating in their most successful period with the 1981 album 'American Exce$$.' This era produced their definitive hit 'Nicole,' which showcased a more melodic, keyboard-augmented style. Despite their regional dominance and critical respect as a premier live act, they struggled to maintain national momentum and disbanded in 1983, though they have seen various reunions since 2005. Their influence persists among Southern rock purists who value their technical proficiency and the seamless integration of blues-rock grit with pop-sensible song structures.
