Pony Up

Pony Up is an all-female indie pop quintet from Montreal, Quebec, that emerged during the city's mid-2000s musical explosion. Formed on New Year's Eve 2002, the band quickly distinguished themselves through a sound that blended the twee sensibilities of Sarah Records with a more modern, frank approach to lyricism.

Their early association with Australian songwriter Ben Lee led to their debut EP being released on his Ten Fingers label, which helped them gain a significant following in Australia, culminating in a high ranking on the Triple J Hottest 100. Their sound is characterized by prominent keyboard melodies, often using vintage or toy-like synth tones, paired with clean electric guitar work and multi-part vocal harmonies. Critically, they were often grouped with the 'twee' or 'chamber pop' movements but were noted for their 'sexually suggestive' and 'unflinchingly personal' lyrics, which provided a sharp edge to their melodic sweetness. Members Lisa Smith and Laura Wills eventually joined the touring lineup of The Dears, highlighting the band's integration into the broader Canadian indie rock elite. Their work remains a cult favorite for fans of the 'Montreal Sound' and those who appreciate indie pop with intellectual and emotional depth.
