Priessnitz is a seminal Czech alternative rock band originating from Jeseník, a town in the Sudetenland region. Formed in 1989, the band's identity is inextricably linked to the atmosphere of their hometown, often referred to by its German name Freiwaldau in their work.
Led by vocalist and artist Jaromír Švejdík (Jaromír 99) and guitarist Petr Kružík, the group evolved from a raw punk-influenced start into a sophisticated blend of gothic rock and atmospheric indie. Their early 90s output, particularly 'Hexe', was heavily influenced by the British gothic scene (Fields of the Nephilim, The Mission), characterized by dark, swirling guitar textures. Over time, they transitioned into a cleaner, more melodic indie rock sound while retaining their signature melancholic 'misty' vibe. Švejdík's parallel career as a graphic novelist (Alois Nebel) has further cemented the band's cultural position as the primary musical chroniclers of the Czech borderlands. They are critically regarded as one of the most influential Czech bands of the post-1989 era, bridging the gap between underground dissent and mainstream alternative success.
