Quasi is a foundational Pacific Northwest indie rock duo consisting of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss. Formed in 1993 following the dissolution of their band Motorgoat and their marriage, the band became a critical darling of the 1990s Portland scene.
Their sound is defined by Coomes' use of the Roxichord - an electric harpsichord - often run through distortion pedals to create a unique, biting keyboard texture that replaces the traditional lead guitar. Janet Weiss, widely considered one of the most influential drummers of her generation (Sleater-Kinney, Wild Flag), provides a powerful, polyrhythmic foundation that allows the duo to sound much larger than their lineup suggests. Their career arc moved from the lo-fi charm of 'R&B Transmogrification' to the polished, cynical pop of 'Featuring Birds' and 'Field Studies.' They have maintained a consistent presence in the indie underground for three decades, known for their close association with Elliott Smith and their ability to blend misanthropic, existential lyricism with infectious, Beatles-esque melodic sensibilities.
