Rafter

Hyperactive, glitchy indie pop that feels like a sugar rush in a recording studio. Manic synths meet basement-show energy for people who like their hooks with a side of chaos.

Intro

Rafter sounds like a mad scientist who accidentally discovered that the secret to eternal energy is a combination of vintage synthesizers and a complete lack of inhibition. The music is a dense, colorful collage of jagged rhythms, bright melodies, and unexpected sonic textures that feel both meticulously crafted and delightfully unhinged. It is the sound of someone who has spent a lifetime in studios but never lost the raw, sweaty excitement of a basement punk show.

What makes Rafter truly distinctive is the 'fearless' approach to genre and structure. One moment you are hearing a funk-inflected bassline, and the next it is buried under a landslide of digital glitches or a sudden, yelping vocal hook. There is a refreshing lack of 'cool' distance here; instead, you get a high-voltage enthusiasm that treats every song like a playground for new sounds. It is music that refuses to sit still, constantly shifting its weight and winking at the listener.

For the uninitiated, Animal Feelings is the definitive starting point. It captures the peak of his manic-pop phase, blending danceable beats with his signature weirdness. If you want to hear his more experimental, prolific side, dive into the 2019 megaseries. It is perfect for when you need a jolt of creative electricity or just want to feel like the world is a slightly more colorful, chaotic place than it was five minutes ago.

Rafter is the performing name of the American musician and producer Rafter Roberts. He owns his own studio, Singing Serpent, in San Diego, California, United States. In 2005 he formed the project Bunky (a combination of the words "bunny" and "monkey") with Emily Joyce. They released one album, Born To Be A Motorcycle (Asthmatic Kitty, 2005). In January 2019 he started a megaseries of Rafter releases with the album Terrestrial Extras and set a release schedule of a new Rafter album every month for the duration of the year.
