Rah Rah was a central fixture of the Canadian prairie indie scene, forming in Regina, Saskatchewan in 2006. Their sound is characterized by a multi-instrumental approach that incorporates violin and accordion into a high-energy indie rock framework, drawing frequent comparisons to fellow Canadians like The Weakerthans and Arcade Fire.
The band's internal chemistry was defined by a democratic songwriting process and a rotating lead vocal structure among members Marshall Burns, Erin Passmore, and others. Over four full-length albums, they evolved from the scrappy, folk-tinged energy of 'Going Steady' (2008) to the more polished, synth-flecked production of 'Vessels' (2015). Critically, they were praised for their ability to translate the isolation and specific cultural markers of the Canadian prairies into universal anthems of love and loss. Despite a hiatus starting in 2016, their legacy remains tied to the 'Regina sound,' a blend of poetic lyricism and exuberant, communal performance. They officially disbanded after a series of farewell shows in 2019.
