Rare was a short-lived but critically respected Northern Irish band formed in Derry during the mid-1990s. The group's sound identity is a sophisticated blend of trip-hop, downtempo, and alternative rock, characterized by the collaboration between vocalist Mary Gallagher and songwriters Locky Morris and Seán Ó'Néill.
Ó'Néill's involvement is particularly significant, as he brought the melodic DNA of his former bands, The Undertones and That Petrol Emotion, into a more experimental, electronic context. Their sole album, released in 1998, arrived at the tail end of the trip-hop boom, offering a more guitar-inflected and melancholic take on the genre than their Bristol contemporaries.
