Founded in 1992 by Melora Creager, Rasputina pioneered the 'cello rock' subgenre, bridging the gap between classical instrumentation and alternative rock sensibilities. Creager, who famously toured with Nirvana as a session cellist, utilized her classical training to create a sound that is both technically sophisticated and subversively punk.

The band's identity is inextricably linked to 'Steampunk' and Gothic subcultures, though their focus remains on historical allegory and Victorian fashion rather than science fiction.
