Gritty, groove-heavy Americana that feels like a long night in a New Orleans dive bar. Weathered vocals and percussive guitar for the restless soul.
Ray Bonneville creates music that feels like it was pulled directly from the humid air of a New Orleans back alley. It is a sound built on a foundation of 'the groove', specifically that laid-back, behind-the-beat pocket that makes the listener lean in. His guitar playing is visceral and physical, using his thumb to drive a deep pulse while his fingers snap out melodies and his palm provides a percussive snare-like crack against the wood.
What sets him apart is the economy of his sound. There is no filler here; every note from his rack harmonica and every gravelly, whispered lyric serves the narrative. His voice is a weathered instrument in its own right, carrying the weight of a man who has lived in Montreal, Austin, and everywhere in between. It is a masterclass in tension and release, where the rhythm section is often just Bonneville's own foot on an amplified piece of plywood.
Start with 'Goin' by Feel' to understand his signature rhythmic approach. It perfectly captures his ability to turn a simple blues progression into a hypnotic, cinematic journey. From there, 'Bad Man’s Blood' offers a deeper look at his storytelling prowess, blending grit with a surprising amount of melodic tenderness.
