Raymond van het Groenewoud

Witty, soulful Dutch-language rock that balances barroom energy with tender piano ballads. It is the sound of a philosopher with a guitar and a sense of humor.

Intro

Raymond van het Groenewoud creates music that feels like a conversation with a brilliant, slightly tipsy uncle who has seen it all. His sound is a rich tapestry of classic rock and roll, soulful rhythm and blues, and the intimate storytelling tradition of European kleinkunst. Whether he is leading a boisterous singalong or sitting alone at a piano, there is an unmistakable warmth and honesty to his arrangements that makes the listener feel immediately included.

What truly sets Raymond apart is his lyrical dexterity. He manages to be hilariously cynical one moment and devastatingly vulnerable the next, often within the same song. He uses the Dutch language with a poet's precision and a clown's timing, finding profound meaning in the mundane details of Belgian life. His music doesn't just provide a melody; it provides a perspective on the human condition that is uniquely Flemish yet universally relatable.

For those new to his catalog, starting with his late 70s and early 80s work provides the perfect entry point into his 'His Excellence' era. You will find high-energy rock anthems like 'Meisjes' alongside deeply moving ballads like 'Je Veux de l'Amour.' It is music for people who appreciate craftsmanship, humor, and the kind of songs that feel like they have existed forever.

Raymond van het Groenewoud (born 14 February 1950) is a Belgian musician. He was born in Schaerbeek, of Dutch descent, and he sings primarily in Dutch. His biggest hits include "Vlaanderen Boven", "Meisjes", "Je Veux de l'Amour", "Zjoske Schone Meid" and "Liefde voor Muziek". He refers to himself as a musician but also a poet, philosopher and clown.
