Poetic spoken-word narratives floating over hazy, late-night club beats. It is the sound of a London comedown, bittersweet nostalgia, and urban romanticism.
Real Lies capture the specific, shimmering ache of the city at 3 AM. Their music is a blend of club culture's rhythmic pulse and the literary intimacy of spoken-word poetry. It sounds like a memory of a rave you attended years ago, filtered through the damp air of a North London evening. The synths are warm and submerged, creating a bed of sound that feels both expansive and claustrophobic, like the city itself.
What truly sets them apart is the narration. Kev Kharas delivers lyrics with a conversational, almost whispered intensity, detailing specific street corners, fleeting romances, and the quiet tragedies of youth. It is not quite rap and not quite singing; it is a rhythmic storytelling that elevates mundane urban life into something cinematic and profound. The production balances house-inflected grooves with ambient textures, making it perfect for the moments between the party and the sleep.
Start with their debut 'Real Life' to understand their foundational mythos of London life, then move to 'Lad Ash' for a more matured, slightly darker exploration of aging and friendship. It is essential listening for anyone who finds beauty in the gray areas of the metropolitan experience.
Real Lies are an English electronic group, formed by Kev Kharas, Tom Watson and Patrick King. They released their debut album Real Life in 2015. They are now a duo after Watson left the band. The band are from the Holloway area of London and reference the boroughs of Islington and Haringey in their tracks. Their second album, Lad Ash, was released in April 2022, followed by We Will Annihilate Our Enemies in April 2025.
